A relative of the suspect in the Georgia high school shooting has since come forward to claim that it was the shooter’s mother who called the school to warn them, just hours before the shooting occurred.

As reported by Fox News, Annie Brown, the sister of the shooter’s mother, said that the mother texted her shortly after the shooting on September 4th, admitting that she was the one who called the school.

“I was the one that notified the school counselor at the high school,” said Marcee Gray, according to screenshots that Brown sent to the Washington Post. “I told them it was an extreme emergency and for them to go immediately and find him to check on him.”

A call log from the family’s phone plan confirmed that there was a roughly 10-minute call from Gray to Apalachee High School at 9:50 AM that morning, just an hour before her son began shooting at teachers and fellow students.

Four people were killed in the shooting: 14-year-old students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, 39-year-old teacher Richard Aspinwall, and 53-year-old teacher Cristina Irimie. Nine others, eight students and one teacher, were injured. The shooter, also aged 14, was stopped by two armed resource officers, surrendering once they drew their guns on him.

Brown elaborated further, stating that her sister had been told that morning by a counselor that her son had been talking about committing a school shooting.

However, Brown also defended her nephew in remarks to the Post, saying that he “was begging for help from everybody around him” for months and that “the adults around him failed him.”

Marcee Gray has a criminal history of her own, having pled guilty to a charge of family violence in December of 2023. As a result, she was ordered to not contact her husband, the suspect’s father, Colin Gray. Colin was arrested on Thursday and charged with two counts of second-degree murder, four counts of involuntary manslaughter, and eight counts of cruelty to children; the charges all stem from the fact that he was the one who bought his son the firearm that would be used in the shooting. The shooter is being charged as an adult.
