Police in Virginia said a teenage boy and his father drowned Saturday at Lake Anna after the boy struggled to stay afloat and the father, while trying to save his son, also sank into the water.
The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office said emergency teams first responded to the lake around 1:10 p.m. Saturday after the 14-year-old boy was reported drowning.
Witnesses told police the boy’s 42-year-old father jumped into the water and searched for the boy as well until he also had trouble keeping his head above the water’s surface.
“It was reported that witnesses observed the father struggling, just before losing sight of him as well,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release. “Several people went into the water in an attempt to locate them but were unsuccessful.”
Divers from Spotsylvania County Fire & EMS, as well as other officials, helped locate the father and son’s submerged remains. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the victims were from out of state, and their identities are being withheld until their family can be notified.
