Former President Donald Trump reissued his endorsement of David Covey in his challenge to Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan ahead of their Republican primary runoff election on Tuesday.
“David is an America First Conservative who will Secure the Border, Restore Election Integrity, Protect our Families and Military/Vets, and Defend our under siege Second Amendment,” Mr. Trump posted Monday on his social media platform Truth Social.
Mr. Trump, who had first endorsed Mr. Covey in January, posted a video Sunday attacking Mr. Phelan for doing a “horrible job” in backing his claims of interference in the 2020 election.
“He’s bad, bad, bad for the Republican Party and democracy,” the former president said. “We need him beaten and beaten badly.”
Mr. Phelan is considered in danger of losing his state House seat in Texas’ 21st District after he trailed Mr. Covey by 1,015 votes in the March primary. Neither candidate earned more than 50% of the vote, which triggered the runoff election that will be held Tuesday. The third candidate knocked out after the March GOP primary, Alicia Davis, has endorsed Mr. Covey.
Mr. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, quoted Mr. Phelan as saying he plans to vote for him in November but faulted him for leading the GOP-controlled Texas House in voting to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton, who was acquitted of bribery and corruption charges by the state Senate.
Mr. Phelan’s promise to vote for him in the presidential election, Mr. Trump said, “do not mitigate the Absolute Embarrassment Speaker Phelan inflicted upon the State of Texas and our Great Republican Party!”
Mr. Trump also endorsed other candidates challenging Texas House Republicans who voted to impeach Mr. Paxton.
