Former President Donald Trump called ex-Vice President Dick Cheney an “irrelevant RINO,” or Republican in name only, for endorsing Kamala Harris in this election.
Mr. Cheney and his daughter, former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, are prominent Trump critics, which, for her, led to a landslide primary loss for reelection in 2022 to fellow Republican Harriet Hageman.
“Dick Cheney is an irrelevant RINO, along with his daughter, who lost by the largest margin in the History of Congressional Races,” Mr. Trump posted Friday on Truth Social.
This week, Ms. Cheney, who was the top Republican on the House Jan. 6 Select Committee, revealed that she and her father will vote for Ms. Harris and plans to support Rep. Colin Allred, Texas Democrat, in his race to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz.
Mr. Cheney followed up with a statement on why he’s supporting the Democratic nominee for president, arguing that Mr. Trump could “never be trusted with power again.”
“In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” Mr. Cheney said. “He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him.”
He added, “As citizens, we each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our Constitution. That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.”
Mr. Trump fired back that Ms. Cheney and the other members of the House Jan. 6 panel should be “prosecuted for what they did” and accused Mr. Cheney of being the “king of endless, nonsensical wars.”
“I am the Peace President, and only I will stop World War III! What Liz Cheney did with the Unselect Committee of Political Losers is unthinkable,” Mr. Trump posted. “She and her Unselects deleted and destroyed all evidence and information — IT’S GONE. Much of it proved that Nancy Pelosi was responsible for J6 — DIDN’T PROVIDE SECURITY.”
