Kansas City has fired the employee responsible for posting personal information about Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker on the city’s official X account. The incident followed Butker's remarks at a commencement ceremony for a Catholic unversity, which resulted in significant backlash from those who disagreed with the NFL player's Catholic values.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas confirmed the firing on KCMO Talk Radio on Thursday.  “The city has separated from the employee who is responsible for the message,” Lucas explained, according to the Daily Mail. “I think that to me, in many ways, resolves the back and forth that’s in the political world. I think there has been accountability from the City of Kansas City. We all look forward to moving on [and] let the Chiefs play.”

The controversy began after Butker's comments at the graduation ceremony of Benedictine College, a Catholic institution, where he emphasized traditional Catholic values regarding gender roles and the importance of raising children. He also was nearly brought to tears as he thanked his wife for her essential contribution to their home, family, and his career. His remarks were the subject of backlash, particularly from feminist groups who misinterpreted his comments as suggesting that women should only focus on childbirth and raising children.

The official Kansas City X account posted the city where Butker resides, which many perceived as an attempt to doxx him. The post was quickly deleted, followed by an apology from the city. “It was not an appropriate post for the City of Kansas City. It should not have ever been up,” Mayor Lucas added in his response.

At the time of the initial post, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey condemned the retaliation and stated that his office would investigate the matter to ensure accountability. “My office is demanding accountability after Kansas City doxxed Harrison Butker last night for daring to express his religious beliefs,” Bailey posted on X. “I will enforce the Missouri Human Rights Act to ensure Missourians are not targeted for their free exercise of religion.”
