Judge Postpones Trump Sentencing in ‘Hush Money’ Case

A New York Judge postponed former President Donald Trump’s sentencing on felony criminal charges until after the presidential election. “This is not a decision this Court makes lightly but it is the decision which in this Court’s view, best advances the interests of justice,” Judge Juan Merchan wrote in a decision handed down on Sept. 6. Merchan issued the ruling after the Republican presidential candidate’s attorneys requested him to delay the Sept. 18 sentencing until Nov. 26, which had been pushed back from July 11. Additionally, Merchan’s order postponed the date for his ruling on the immunity subject until Nov. 12.

Trump Campaign Responds: “There should be no sentencing in the Manhattan DA’s Election Interference Witch Hunt. As mandated by the United States Supreme Court, this case, along with all of the other Harris-Biden Hoaxes, should be dismissed,” said Steven Cheung, a Trump campaign spokesperson, in a statement to Fox News Digital. RFK Jr.’s Name Should be Removed from Michigan Ballot: Appeals Court

The Michigan Court of Appeals ruled on Sept. 6 that Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s name must be removed from the state’s Nov. 5 presidential ballot. The three-judge panel noted that Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D) “had no basis to deny (Kennedy’s) request to withdraw his name from the ballot,” effectively overturning the Michigan Department of State and Court of Claims Judge Christopher Yates. The lower court judge recently determined that minor presidential party candidates cannot withdraw their names from the ballot. “Elections are not just games, and the Secretary of State (SOS) is not obligated to honor the whims of candidates for public office,” Yates wrote in a four-page opinion.

North Carolina: RFK Jr.’s name must be removed from North Carolina ballots for president, an intermediate-level Court of Appeals ruled on Sept. 6. No legal explanation was attached to the decision. This comes just as state officials were about to mail out the country’s first absentee ballots for the presidential race. It could take up to two weeks to reprint and assemble ballot packages. White House Pushes Back Against Trump’s Child Care Comments

The White House rebuked former President Trump’s comments regarding child care costs during his appearance before the Economic Club of New York on Sept. 5. Officials say the GOP nominee’s plans to raise tariffs would add to the costs necessary to offer families child care services. “If you have any idea what the hell that answer means, you’re a better detective than I am, because these tariffs that he wants to apply across the board would amount to a $4,000 tax increase on working families,” said White House senior deputy press secretary Andrew Bates in an MSNBC interview. Vice President Kamala Harris has requested that the $3,600 child tax credit for families be restored, originally inserted into the 2021 American Rescue Plan.

Trump on Child Care: When asked if he would commit to “prioritizing legislation to make child care affordable,” Trump stated that revenues from tariffs would be sufficient to pay for child care costs. “I think when you talk about the kind of numbers that I’m talking about, because child care is child care, you have to have it in this country. You have to have it,” Trump said. “But when you talk about those numbers compared to the type of numbers I’m talking about by taxing foreign nations at levels that they’re not used to, but they’ll get used to it very quickly.” He stopped short of providing specific legislation. Treasury Recovers $1.3 Billion in Unpaid Taxes from Wealthy Americans

The Treasury Department announced on Sept. 6 that it recovered $1.3 billion in unpaid taxes from high-income Americans. According to a press release, this was part of a campaign launched in February 2024 to pursue 125,000 high-income, high-wealthy taxpayers who had not submitted taxes since 2017. These people were identified after the IRS discovered third-party forms to suggest they earned income but did not file tax returns.

Inflation Reduction Act: The recovered funds were part of the current administration’s efforts to ensure individuals pay their taxes. “Prior to the Inflation Reduction Act, the IRS non-filer program ran sporadically since 2016 due to severe budget and staff limitations that did not allow these cases to be pursued,” the Treasury Department said in a statement. The $1.3 billion would be enough to pay a half day’s worth of interest charges. Related: Interest payments eating income tax revenue…

Economy Creates Fewer Jobs Than Expected for Second Straight Month

The US economy created fewer jobs than economists expected for the second consecutive month. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the country added 142,000 new jobs in August, up from a downwardly adjusted 89,000 in July. This fell short of the consensus estimate of 160,000. The unemployment rate edged down to 4.2% from 4.3%. Average hourly earnings rose 0.4% monthly. The labor force participation rate was unchanged at 62.7%, and average weekly hours ticked up to 34.3. Most of the job creation was concentrated in a handful of sectors, including construction (34,000), health care (31,000), government (24,000), and social assistance (13,000). The manufacturing sector lost 24,000 jobs.

US Stocks Tank: The US stock market tanked following the employment data, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index and the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average plunging around 400 points. The S&P 500 tumbled 1.6%. US Treasury yields slumped while the US Dollar Index (DXY) made modest gains. The August jobs report cemented a Federal Reserve interest rate cut later this month.
