Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) vowed Sunday that the Republican Party will properly address security along the southern border should it retake the White House this November.

Donalds made his comment when asked about a comment President Joe Biden made against the Republican Party, claiming that Republicans in Congress prioritized “partisan politics” over the nation’s security. The Florida congressman contended that the border was secure when former President Donald Trump was president, and that Biden chose to end Trump’s border policies simply because they were put in place by Trump.

“It was a very stupid decision by Joe Biden, the country has suffered as a result,” Donalds said in an interview on FOX News Channel’s FOX News Sunday. “So now, what we’re going to do is go back to ending catch and release, go back to remain in Mexico, we are going to have to deport millions of people who should not be here, because our cities and states simply cannot handle the flow of all these illegal migrants.”

Donalds added that in addition to Trump reimplementing his older policies should he become president again, a Republican-controlled Congress would also move forward with the Secure the Border Act to provide the president with “more authorities to secure the nation.”

Republicans and Democrats have gone back and forth over the topic of securing the border, with the Biden administration recently endorsing a move by the Senate to take up a bipartisan border security agreement. The endorsement comes as Biden and Democrats are looking to appear proactive on border security ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

Some Republicans have criticized the seemingly about-face by the Biden administration and Democrats, with Pennsylvania Senate Republican candidate Dave McCormick arguing the bill does not do enough to secure the southern border, and also utilizes resources to expedite the asylum process. The candidate is challenging incumbent Sen. Bob Casey Jr. (D-PA).

Polling data from earlier this month found that 53% of younger voters trust Trump more than Biden to secure the border, while 52% of voters trust Trump more when it comes to lowering prices. Both border security and the cost of living are expected to be major motivators for voters ahead of the 2024 election, which could end up being a rematch between Trump and Biden.
