When former President Donald Trump seemed to be coasting to the White House against an enfeebled President Joe Biden, the Republican Party was also sanguine about the likely results of this year’s House and Senate elections. Trump would be president, and his coattails would undoubtedly pull a few senators and representatives across the finish line, giving Republicans a workable governing majority.

But that was before the Democratic Party pushed Biden aside in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris. Where Trump was up comfortably by 3 points against Biden, Harris is now up by 2. Bigger leads in swing states such as Arizona and Georgia have also disappeared. Republicans need to face the real possibility that Trump could lose in November, as well as the real danger Harris would pose if Democrats took the House and maintained 50 seats in the Senate.

In the House, Republicans hold a small eight-seat majority in a chamber of 435. Election forecasters have said Republicans have a strong chance of winning 209 of this year’s races, compared to 205 seats for the Democratic Party. That leaves 21 seats up for grabs between now and Election Day. Democrats need to take only 13 to regain the majority, a definite possibility. All 21 of the toss-up races are worth spending on, but the biggest battles are being fought in blue states, with Reps. Ken Calvert (R-CA) and David Valadao (R-CA) facing tough reelections in California, as well as Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) facing a close fight in New York.

The Senate map is a bit more favorable to Republicans, but they will still need to beat a longtime incumbent to take control from Democrats. Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), who has been in office since 2007, is the Republicans’ best shot at taking a seat from Democrats. Navy SEAL officer Tim Sheehy enjoys a 5-point lead over Tester. Republicans also have shots at winning in Ohio, where Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) is ahead of Republican businessman Bernie Moreno; in Michigan, where Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) is beating former Rep. Mike Rogers, a Republican; and in Pennsylvania, where Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) is beating Republican businessman David McCormick.

What makes Harris so dangerous if Democrats were to take the House and hold the Senate is that she and Senate Democrats have pledged to end the filibuster. All that talk you hear about “gridlock” if Harris manages to win is, at best, wishful thinking.

Democrats talk about the importance of political “norms” but have a long history of casting norms aside when it suits them. That is what happened when then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, ended the judicial filibuster in 2013, and it will happen again if Democrats maintain the Senate under a Harris administration.

Trillions of dollars in spending under a Green New Deal, mandatory gun buybacks, bans on the purchase of gas-powered cars, and amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants could all sail through the Senate without a single Republican vote if Harris becomes president.

Some have argued that the Supreme Court could check Harris’s power grab, but the Democrats have a plan for that, too: court packing. They have legislation written that would force Republican-appointed Supreme Court justices into early retirement by denying them jurisdiction to hear the most important cases.

The danger of a Harris administration coupled with a Democratic House and Senate is unmeasurable but huge. The first line of defense is denying her the White House. But Republicans should also make every effort to defeat Democrats down the ballot, too.
