Left-wing political commentator Brian Stelter is returning to CNN nearly two years after he was dramatically fired by the network’s former boss.
“I am thrilled to share that I am returning as the lead author of CNN’s Reliable Sources newsletter, the digest I founded in 2015,” Stelter wrote in a message to readers and viewers on Tuesday. “I’m returning to CNN in a brand new role as Chief Media Analyst, which means I’ll be appearing on air, developing digital content, and helming this newsletter.”
Stelter noted that his new role will differ from his previous stint on the network, when he hosted “Reliable Sources” in a weekend and early evening time-slot.

“The media industry has matured, CNN has evolved, and I have changed a lot since I signed off two years ago,” Stelter wrote. “After 20+ years as a news junkie, I changed my habits and tuned out for a bit. I also changed my vantage point, moving from Manhattan to a horse farm near one of Donald Trump‘s golf clubs. I experienced the news more like an everyday consumer, and in doing so, I learned a whole lot about the attention economy and the information ecosystem. I’m looking forward to sharing what I learned with you.”
Stelter’s return to CNN is set to officially begin on September 9, he explained in a lengthy X thread.
The news comes nearly two years after the “Reliable Sources” host was fired by then-CNN boss Chris Licht, who attempted to pull the network in a more centrist direction. Licht was reportedly asked by higher-ups at parent company Warner Bros. Discovery to move the network to the center after it was defined by extreme left-wing partisanship during the Trump Administration.
Stelter was featured prominently as an on-air host during this era, as his show primarily focused on criticizing Trump, as well as other conservative lawmakers and media entities. During his previous stint at CNN, Stelter hyped up the thoroughly debunked Russian collusion hoax, and referred to the infamous Hunter Biden laptop story as a a “manufactured scandal” peddled by the “right-wing media machine,” Fox News noted.
Less than a year after Stelter was fired, Licht himself was ousted after reports of internal strife at the network. Stelter soon began appearing on the network again, though the company told Fox News that there were no intentions of bringing him back as early as this year.
