Billionaire Elon Musk “can’t wait” to serve on a commission that former President Donald Trump, if he wins the election, would form to target federal agencies for cuts.
The Washington Post reported that Mr. Trump and his advisers have for months discussed his potential administration forming a commission to audit federal agencies and identify thousands of programs to cut. The publication said the commission would be led by prominent business executives and that Mr. Musk has made clear he wants to serve.
Mr. Musk confirmed the report on X, the social media platform he owns.
“I can’t wait. There is a lot of waste and needless regulation in government that needs to go,” he wrote.
The Trump campaign welcomed Mr. Musk’s enthusiasm but told The Washington Times it was too soon to discuss personnel for the next administration.
“Elon Musk has been a champion for free speech and standing up to social media giants and government officials, like Kamala Harris, who push for more censorship. It is premature to discuss any prospective personnel in the next administration, but we welcome the enthusiasm and support of Elon Musk,” Trump campaign senior adviser Brian Hughes said.
Mr. Trump told Reuters in August that he “certainly would” be open to appointing Mr. Musk to a Cabinet or advisory role if he wins the White House. Mr. Musk responded by posting a seemingly AI-generated picture of himself on X posing as the head of the “Department of Government Efficiency,” writing: “I am willing to serve.”
A few days later, Mr. Trump said on “The Shawn Ryan Show” that Mr. Musk “wants to be involved,” but would be too busy to serve in his Cabinet.
“I’d put him in the Cabinet, absolutely, but I don’t know how he could do that with all the things he’s got going,” Mr. Trump said. “But he could sort of, as the expression goes, consult with the country and give you some very good ideas.”
The GOP nominee said what Mr. Musk really wants to do “is get involved in cutting some of the fat.”
Mr. Musk, who co-founded and continues to run major companies like electric vehicle maker Tesla and rocket and spacecraft manufacturer SpaceX, endorsed Mr. Trump in July after the failed assassination attempt on the former president. The X owner later hosted a conversation with Mr. Trump on the platform.
During that conversation, Mr. Musk floated the idea of a government efficiency agency, saying, ”I’d be happy to help out on such a commission.”
