The Republican Jewish Coalition on Monday endorsed the GOP primary candidate that will face off against House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good (R-Va.), arguing that the congressman has “shamefully” abandoned Israel in its time of need.
“If you don’t stand with the Jewish community, if you don’t stand with Israel, Republican or Democrat, the RJC will work to defeat you,” RJC CEO Matt Brooks said in a statement.
Brooks announced that the influential Jewish group will back former Navy SEAL and Virginia state Sen. John McGuire in his 5th District primary bid against Good because of the incumbent’s dissenting vote against a $95 billion emergency spending bill Saturday that includes $17 billion in military assistance for Israel.
“Congressman Bob Good (VA-05) shamefully voted against this critical support for the Jewish state, abandoning Israel as it continues to fight for its very survival after the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust,” the head of the RJC said.
“This vote showed who Israel’s true friends are, and exposed those like Congressman Bob Good who are not,” Brooks added.
While 112 congressional Republicans voted against the aid package, the vast majority of vulnerable House GOP lawmakers voted in favor.
The RJC said that concerns about Good’s “undermining of US support for Israel” have been raised in the past, noting that he opposed a standalone Israel aid bill in February, and voted against the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act in December, which included funds for missiles used by Israel’s Iron Dome and other bilateral research and development programs.
In a statement, Good explained that his support for Israel’s right to defend itself “remains unshakeable” despite his vote Saturday.
“We are nearly $35 trillion in debt, so the era of unpaid for supplemental spending bills must end,” he argued.
“Rather than saddling the American taxpayers with the bill, the Senate should have taken up the $14.2 bullion paid-for Israel bill five months ago to help our ally.”
Virginia’s Fifth District primary will be held on June 18.
The RJC referred to Good’s opponent, McGuire, as a “conservative stalwart who made his support for Israel clear,” urging Virginians to support him.
