The New York hush-money case against former President Donald Trump has won over at least one person — former FBI Director James Comey.
Mr. Comey, who was fired from the FBI leadership position by Mr. Trump in the wake of the agency having spied on him and his campaign, said he was initially skeptical of the case being brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
But after having heard the case, Mr. Comey said this week, it was a slam-dunk to bring and there’s “zero chance” Mr. Trump will be vindicated.
“I wasn’t sure that I would have [filed the charges] when I read the indictment. But now, having seen the case, I’m not sure — after investigating it — how they wouldn’t bring it,” Mr. Comey told NewsNation on Wednesday. “They had a much stronger case than I imagined.”
Mr. Bragg brought 34 counts of falsifying business records against Mr. Trump over payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels requiring, prior to the 2016 election, that she keep quiet about a purported affair with Mr. Trump.
“There’s an overwhelming chance of a conviction, a significant but much smaller chance of a hung jury and zero chance of an acquittal,” Mr. Comey said.
