Portland's far-left District Attorney Mike Schmidt conceded to moderate Democrat challenger Nathan Vasquez on Wednesday afternoon following Tuesday night's election results.
Schmidt's office issued a statement expressing his commitment to a "smooth transition" and congratulating his moderate opponent on his victory.
"It is looking as if I will not be serving another four years as Multnomah County District Attorney. I have called Nathan Vasquez to congratulate him on his victory. While we do not always see eye to eye, I am committed to a smooth transition. Thank you to this amazing community for the support they have shown for this campaign. And thank you for the opportunity to serve these past four years. It is an honor I will cherish for a lifetime," wrote Schmidt.
Vasquez will be formally appointed Multnomah County DA in January 2025. Vasquez had over 54 percent of the votes compared to Schmidt who received 45 percent, according to the Secretary of State's website as of 4:30 pm.
