CNN interview shows Kamala Harris still has nothing meaningful to say on inflation — or anything else

Our biggest single takeaway from CNN’s brief Kamala Harris-Tim Walz interview Thursday night: Harris still has nothing meaningful to say on inflation.

Or, really, on anything else: Dana Bash pushed her twice to reveal her Day One agenda; she dodged — then Walz did, too.

She insisted her “values have not changed,” but the only thing we know about her values is her record as a lefty California Democrat and her choice of impeccably-progressive Walz as her running mate.

She still doesn’t have a policy section on her campaign website.

And the centerpiece of the “economic plan” she announced just before the Democratic convention was price controls — which, when pretty much everyone dumped on the idea, her campaign quickly announced are not a major policy.

Yet, the one time inflation came up in the interview, Harris fell back again on opposing “price gouging.”

She also implicitly admitted the “Inflation Control Act” was mainly just Green New Deal spending, by citing it as her excuse for no longer endorsing the GND or a ban on fracking.

Indeed, she seemed intent on protecting her left flank with her word-salad that she’s “always believed” that “the climate crisis is real, that it is an urgent matter to which we should apply metrics that include holding ourselves to deadlines around time.”

Deadlines “around time” — are there any other kind?

Crucially, she fully defended Bidenomics, and certainly hasn’t offered any other distinct economic policy beyond those now-disavowed price controls.

She’s called for trillions in new federal spending, and is on record favoring trillions more in tax hikes, so sure seems to be promising more of what Biden delivered.

Despite that, she claims she’ll be different, with another hefty helping of salad: She aims “to bring America what I believe the American people deserve, which is a new way forward, and turn the page on the last decade of what I believe has been contrary to where the spirit of our country really lies.”

“The last decade” covers two years of Barack Obama’s presidency (with Joe as veep!) plus four years each of Trump and then Biden.

What part of Obama and Biden does she want to “turn the page” on?

Word salad isn’t simple incoherence: It’s what you get when you talk at length while avoiding facts and firm convictions, offering only vibes.

And Tim “My grammar’s not always correct” Walz isn’t going to offer anything more.

Most of the media seem intent on letting them get away with it, but we’re pretty sure the voters have a higher standard.
