Vice President Kamala Harris took a 1-point lead over former President Donald Trump following the Democratic National Convention, according to a national poll released late Thursday.
The Wall Street Journal poll found that 48% of respondents back Ms. Harris, while 47% support Mr. Trump. When third-party candidates are included in the survey, Ms. Harris slightly widens her lead, 47% to 45%.
Both results fall within the survey’s 2.5% margin of error.
The results are the first time a Democratic candidate, either Ms. Harris or President Biden, has had a lead over Mr. Trump since April, according to The Journal.
Respondents also said they view Ms. Harris more favorably (49%) compared to Mr. Trump (45%). The poll also found that Mr. Trump is viewed more unfavorably (53%) than Ms. Harris (49%). That’s a big gain for Ms. Harris compared to April when her unfavorability rating was 23% higher than her favorability rating.
Still, she remains underwater on her job performance with 51% disapproving of her handling of the vice presidency with 42% approving.
The Journal attributed the discrepancy between her overall favorability rating and job performance rating as a sign that people are separating her role as the Democratic nominee from her work in the Biden administration.
The poll was taken in the aftermath of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, with The Journal surveying 1,500 registered voters between Aug. 24 and Aug. 28.
