Reddit appeared to be back online after a significant outage on Wednesday afternoon that left users unable to access the popular online forum.
User reports about issues with Reddit service surged around 4 pm ET, according to Down Detector, a website that tracks online outages.
The site received more than 150,000 reports as users experienced issues with Reddit’s app, website and connection.
When attempting to access the site, users received the error message: “We have encountered an error. Please try again later.” The cause of the outage was not immediately clear, though Reddit acknowledged that it was experienced “degraded performance.”
“A fix has been implemented and we are monitoring the results,” Reddit said in an update around 4:45 pm ET.
Reddit did not immediately return a request for further comment. The company experienced a similar widespread outage last April.
The San Francisco, Calif.-based company operates one of the most popular social media apps in the world. Reddit had more than 267 million weekly active users as of April.
Reddit shares were nearly 5% in Wednesday trading and ticked slightly lower after the closing bell.
