Media anticipates Harris-Walz interview

The prospect of a debut interview with Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz on Thursday on CNN has sparked considerable interest from other news organizations. Here are a few examples of that coverage from the last 24 hours:

“Don’t think Kamala Harris’s handlers are shielding her from tough questions? Consider that in her first sit-down interview with the press this week, she’s bringing along a crutch: running mate Tim Walz,” The Wall Street Journal’s editorial board declared.

“Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota governor Tim Walz have finally agreed to a formal on-camera interview, and will sit with CNN for their first joint interview on Thursday. The lucky winner of the ’Who gets to interview the most camera-shy presidential candidate since Joe Biden’s basement campaign’ contest is CNN’s chief political correspondent and anchor, Dana Bash,” National Review columnist Jim Geraghty said.

The presidential campaign of Republican nominee Donald Trump also had a say.

“It’s no coincidence that Kamala & Walz’s first interview is scheduled for the Thursday night before Labor Day weekend. They already hope it gets lost — and it hasn’t even aired yet. Kamala is clearly scared to do an interview on her own and it’s pre-taped so they can clean it up if things go badly,” the campaign said in a statement shared with Inside the Beltway.

TRUMP’S 10 QUESTIONS

In the meantime, the aforementioned Trump campaign has come up with  “10 questions Dana Bash must ask Kamala Harris.”

And here are those questions, verbatim from the source:

If you are capable of lowering prices for Americans, why haven’t you done it in the three years you have been in office?

You say housing affordability would be a “Day One priority” if you were elected. Why is it not a priority now? Housing isn’t affordable for the average American in 99% of the nation.

You co-sponsored Medicare-for-All and the Green New Deal? Do you still support these multi-trillion-dollar takeovers of the American economy?

You talk a lot about “freedom.” What about the freedoms of Laken Riley, Rachel Morin, and Jocelyn Nungaray? These women were killed by illegal immigrants who were let into the country under your watch.

President Trump didn’t need a “border bill” to secure the border. Why did you support executive actions like stopping construction of the border wall and halting deportations that intentionally unsecured the border?

Trump was the first president in decades to start no new wars. Under your watch, wars are popping up in Europe and the Middle East. Why is that?

Why did you conceal Joe Biden’s cognitive decline from the American people?

You supported the Defund the Police movement and have said more that police doesn’t mean more safety. Why do you want fewer police officers?

You’ve called for getting rid of cash bail and your campaign hasn’t backed away from it. Why do you still support such a radical view?

You have sent anonymous aides out to claim you’ve abandoned the radically liberal positions that you’ve held for decades. Do you think lying to the American people is the best strategy?

PRESIDENTS AND CEOS

Presidential historian Tevi Troy has written a new book with a telling title: “The Power and the Money: The Epic Clashes Between Commanders in Chief and Titans of Industry.”

The author served as deputy secretary of health and human services during the presidency of George W. Bush — and as a senior White House aide in that administration.

“Presidents come and go. They serve four years, sometimes eight. But CEOs — chief executive officers of large corporations — in contrast, can potentially reign for decades. Given their long tenures, they can interact with multiple presidents, necessitating models of engagement for coping with the most powerful person in the land,” Mr. Troy wrote.

Indeed.

“Tevi Troy takes readers on a riveting journey through the biggest battles between CEOs and the nation’s commander in chief. He unearths the untold stories — both political and personal — that have shaped America,” said publisher Regnery History in advance notes for the book.

“Troy shows how the vast reach of the federal government has become a critical fact of life for every business, entrepreneur, and innovator. Today, companies find themselves navigating a competitive landscape defined by stringent regulations, so top CEOs and key business leaders must influence the legislative and regulatory system,” the publisher said.

“As public affairs teams and government relations experts put forward strategies to survive Washington, CEOs have become the most important warrior on the frontlines. The Power and the Money shows how some of the nation’s most important CEOs forged (and fumbled) relationships with the president,” Regency History said.

ON THE RADAR

Yes, the nation is still an exceptional one.

Fox Nation — Fox News Media’s subscription streaming service — will debut “American Exceptionalism With Benjamin Hall” on Friday. Mr. Hall, a Fox News correspondent, will take viewers on an uplifting journey to Hazard, Kentucky. Once a booming Appalachian coal mining town, Hazard has faced an opioid epidemic, an exodus of opportunity and a devastating flood.

Mr. Hall, however, has uncovered a “resilience, ingenuity and the unyielding American spirit” through his visit. His guests include Hazard Mayor Donald “Happy” Mobelini, SPARK Ministries regional coordinator Jenny Combs, a group of determined high school students and other residents.

As a reminder, Mr. Hall was catastrophically injured in 2022 while covering the war in Ukraine for Fox News.
