CNN contributor Scott Jennings said Tuesday night that it “shows an extreme lack of confidence” for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris to need “an emotional support” animal in her running mate for her first campaign interview since becoming the nominee. The vice president will be accompanied by Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) for the interview.

“Weak sauce for Kamala Harris to demand an emotional support animal for her first interview. Shows an extreme lack of confidence for Thursday night event on @cnn," Jennings posted, along with a clip of his interview on the matter with CNN host Anderson Cooper.

"The line [is] now going to be, ‘Well, why isn't she doing it by herself,” Cooper said.

“Yeah, I do think people are going to bring that up," Jennings said. "Like I have great confidence in Dana [Bash] at CNN to do this. I think it's incredibly weak, weak sauce to show up with your running mate, the fact that they don't have enough confidence in her to let her sit herself, the actual top of the ticket and do a single interview.”

“In fact, I think the hand wringing and the gyrations over this over the last month," he said, "show troubling, lack of confidence in her political ability, which also makes you wonder, as a voter: What kind of president would you be if this kind of a small time decision – can we do an interview or not – what does that look like for your decision making process? So, yes, I think Republicans are going to think it's pretty weak to show up with, effectively, someone to take up half the time,” he said.

Harris’ campaign is reportedly demanded a seated debate, with notes, for her Sept. 10 confrontation with Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump. The two campaigns agreed eventually to a standing, notes free contest. Harris’ allies have reportedly cautioned her against talking to the media and the vice president has limited her conversations with reporters to favored media outlets when she is often off the record.

Trump has been relentless in his criticism of Harris for refusing to do interviews. "She refuses to do any interviews or press conferences, almost 30 days now, she has not done an interview," he said of Harris at a North Carolina rally. "You know why she hasn't done an interview? Because she's not smart. She's not intelligent."
