China rammed two Philippine Coast Guard vessels in the South China Sea this last week. The Houthis are still attacking oil tankers, the latest one a Greek-flagged ship named the Sounion on August 23. Two aircraft carriers (The USS Theodore Roosevelt and USS Abraham Lincoln) deployed to the Middle East were sent as attacks from Hezbollah heat up. Meanwhile, the US Navy has sidelined 17 support ships due to lack of personnel. Does anyone see a potential problem as world tensions increase?

“The TR arrived in the Middle East in early July, while fellow carrier Abraham Lincoln steamed into the region last week.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced the decision in a statement over the weekend.

The extensions are part of America’s surge in forces to the region this month in an attempt to avert a larger conflict between Israel and Iran and its proxies.” Air Force Times

And yet, according to the Navy, they’ve had to “sideline” 17 Navy support ships for lack of personnel. Support ships are part of the MSC – Military Sealift Command and are an absolute necessity.

“The Military Sealift Command (MSC) is reportedly facing operational challenges due to a shortage of qualified civilian mariners. This prompted a strategic plan to sideline 17 Navy support ships, USNI News reported, citing three people familiar with deliberations. This proposal, termed as a “force generation reset,” reportedly aims to alleviate the staffing strain by putting two Lewis and Clark-class replenishment ships, one fleet oiler, twelve Spearhead-class Expeditionary Fast Transports (EPF) and two expeditionary sea bases into extended maintenance while reassigning their crews to other vessels…

Sal Mercogliano, reportedly a former MSC mariner and history professor, criticized the long-term management of the force. “This is basically the result of many years of neglect and mismanagement of their force,” Mercogliano told USNI News. “They are just burning through people.”” Daily Caller

This is an issue that has been festering for a long time.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Support ships are a necessity for Naval operations in seas all over the world.  As this issue causes problems for US Naval power, China is becoming more and more aggressive, and the Middle East continues to boil. None of that even counts the fact that Ukraine conducted an incursion into Russia this last week. The world is on fire, and the Navy is experiencing personnel problems…as are other Military Branches.

What we have is a harbinger of extreme danger. As world tensions increase on a daily basis, the US Military must be strong, and the Commander-in-Chief is critical to that issue. The next few months could be…interesting.
