In the case that Israel is attacked by Iran or other hostile neighbors, the majority of Americans are against using US military forces to defend Israel.
After an ostensive Israeli-organized assassination on Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh while he was on a diplomatic visit to the Iranian capital of Tehran, tensions between Israel and Iran have mounted. On top of that, Lebanese military group Hezbollah has ramped up its rocket attacks on Israel’s northern border. Hezbollah is largely perceived as a proxy of Iran, and any escalation of military activities on its part will largely be attributed to Iran.
According to a poll carried out by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, 42% percent of Americans are in favor of using American troops in Israel if they are attacked by Iran.
By contrast, 56% are against such a course of action. 53% of Republican voters, 42% of independent voters, and 34% of Democrat voters are in favor of coming to Israel’s defense in the event of an Iranian attack.
In a similar vein, 55% of Americans are against coming to Israel’s defense in the event of an attack by one of Israel’s neighbors. Only 41% support such a military action.
As far as partisan affiliations are concerned, 55% of Republican voters, 35% of independent voters, and 35% or Democrat voters support the use of American troops to defend Israel in the case that it gets attacked by its neighbors.
There is clearly no real organic desire among the American public for another war in the Middle East. That place is a perpetual conflict zone, and US intervention is only going to make it worse.
This is another reason why the US should recalibrate its relationship with Israel. That means stop sending it military aid and make it start assuming its own defense functions and begin to shoulder the bulk of the consequences of its risky geopolitical behavior.
From there, the US needs to retract its foreign policy ambitions and shift military resources to the US’s southern border with Mexico — the number one geopolitical hotspot the US must police.
