U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland is responding to former President Donald Trump’s promise to pardon the rioters convicted in the Jan. 6 insurrection.
“The convictions indicate that both juries and judges have agreed with our charges. Pardons are another matter and I really don’t have anything to say about that,” he told reporters in Washington Friday.
Garland was also asked about the possibility of another insurrection should Trump not win in November. He said anyone who is thinking of interfering with the peaceful transfer of power should look at the more than 1,400 prosecutions from the Jan. 6 2021 insurrection.
“The last January 6th, the coming January 6th and every January 6th after that, I want to make clear to anybody who is thinking about interfering with that. They can see what we’ve done with respect to the January 6th prosecutions and (the) Justice Department will continue to protect our democracy,” he said.
