Take congressional committees off TV

There’s a famous adage that politics is show business for ugly people, and nowhere is that more true than in the House of Representatives.

On Thursday, a hearing of the House Oversight Committee devolved into insults between lawmakers as Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), and Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) took turns insulting each other’s character, intelligence, and physical appearance.

Greene sparked the tiff with a remark about Crockett’s “fake eyelashes” interfering with her ability to read. Ocasio-Cortez responded by condescendingly referring to Greene as “baby girl,” prompting the Georgia Republican to say the New York Democrat lacked intelligence.

Crockett, for her part, chimed in and asked Chairman James Comer (R-KY), “If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach-blonde bad-built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?” in reference to Greene’s physical appearance.

Speaking for nearly everyone who watched the charade, Comer responded with a confused, “Uh, what now?”

While these kinds of personal barbs and insults are a rarity in Congress, shocking and outrageous comments are not. During hearings, lawmakers regularly seek out made-for-social-media viral moments that boost their public image and entice donors to open their checkbooks for “fighters.” It is a nauseating exercise of self-aggrandizement that has sullied the legislative process and encouraged lawmakers to be performers first and legislators second.

Greene, Crockett, and Ocasio-Cortez are not making a show out of their work in Congress because they simply feel like it; they are making a show because it behooves them politically and personally to do so. All three lawmakers created a viral moment that bolstered their publicity and catered to their respective voter bases. And since all three members have no risk of electoral backlash due to the partisan lean of their districts, there is little electoral incentive for them to behave any differently.

The solution to this proliferation of divas is to turn the cameras in congressional hearings off while ensuring that all audio is recorded. This small but significant change will ensure public transparency for congressional hearings while removing the incentive for lawmakers to turn the hearing into an opportunity to boost their public profile. And the loudest members of Congress will stop being the face of the institution.
