Water with more than 1.5 milligrams of fluoride per liter correlates with lower IQ levels in children, according to a new report from the National Toxicology Program, part of the Health and Human Services Department.
The NTP report released Wednesday drew its conclusions from health patterns through October 2023 in foreign countries such as China, India, Pakistan, Iran, Mexico and Canada.
In the studies, some pregnant women, children and babies were exposed to water with more than 1.5 milligrams of fluoride per liter, the recommended limit established by the World Health Organization. The NTP researchers had moderate statistical confidence in the association between exposure to higher amounts of fluoride and lower intelligence quotient in children.
The U.S. uses a much lower recommended limit for community water supply at 0.7 milligrams per liter, and there was not enough data to determine whether that level of fluoridation also correlates with a negative impact on children’s IQ, the NTP said.
The 0.7-milligram limit was established by the U.S. Public Health Service in 2015. In the five decades prior, the limit was 1.2 milligrams per liter, according to The Associated Press.
Some Americans do receive water with more fluoride than the recommended amount due to naturally occurring fluoride.
There was no evidence found connecting fluoridated water to a lowered intelligence among exposed adults.
