Gov. Tim Walz Takes DNC Stage on Day 3

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) accepted the vice-presidential nomination as he took center stage on the third day of the Democratic National Convention. He joked that you should “never underestimate a public school teacher,” and tapped into his football roots. “It’s the fourth quarter; we’re down a field goal, but we’re on offense, and we got the ball,” Walz said. “Kamala Harris is ready. Our job is to get in the trenches and to the blocking and tackling one inch at a time, one yard at a time.” Walz also led chants of “we’re not going back!”

‘Weird’: During his 16-minute speech, Walz employed a key term from the campaign. He stated that the policies of former President Donald Trump and Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) are “weird” and wrong,” telling the crowd that “it’s an agenda that serves nobody except the richest and the most extreme amongst us. And it’s an agenda that does nothing for our neighbors in need.” Related: Tim Walz: Warrior or stolen valor?

RFK Jr. Plans to Address the Nation on Aug. 23

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will address the nation from Phoenix, AZ, on Aug. 23, the campaign announced. On social media, Stefanie Spear, the longshot White House hopeful’s press secretary, stated that Kennedy would discuss “the present historic moment and his path forward.” NBC News reported that he plans to end his candidacy and endorse Trump, citing two sources familiar with the plans. This comes after Kennedy’s running mate, Nicole Shanahan, revealed that the campaign is weighing its options: stay in the race and “risk” a Harris-Walz administration or drop out and “join forces” with The GOP challenger.

What Does Trump Think?: Trump was asked if he had heard of the reports about Kennedy potentially ending his bid. “I haven’t, but I respect him. I’ve respected him for a long time. I mean, I know where he’s coming from and it’s a little different philosophy. Very smart guy, however. And I had heard he was thinking about it for a period of time, but no, I have not heard this,” Trump said. “I mean, if he endorsed me, would I be honored by that? Absolutely.” Trump will be holding an Arizona rally in Glendale on Aug. 23. Related: Is RFK Jr searching for an off-ramp?

US Economy Created 818,000 Fewer Jobs: Bureau of Labor Statistics

The US economy created 818,000 fewer jobs from April 2023 to March 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) annual benchmark revisions. The annual BLS adjustment showed last year’s employment growth tumbling 0.5% from what was initially reported. This represented the largest downward revision since the global financial crisis in 2009. Nearly all job categories recorded lower numbers, led by professional and business services (negative 358,000), leisure and hospitality (negative 150,000), retail (negative 129,000), and manufacturing (negative 115,000). Since these are preliminary estimates, the finalized numbers will not be published until early 2025.

Responses: The White House dismissed the revisions. “This preliminary estimate doesn’t change the fact that the jobs recovery has been and remains historically strong, delivering solid job and wage gains, strong consumer spending, and record small business creation,” said Jared Bernstein, chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers (CEA), in a statement. Trump called it a “massive scandal,” writing on Truth Social: “The Harris-Biden Administration has been caught fraudulently manipulating Job Statistics to hide the true extent of the Economic Ruin they have inflicted upon America.” Related: Jobs report activates Sahm rule recession…

Judy Woodruff Apologizes Over False Trump Story

Judy Woodruff, the senior correspondent at “PBS Newshour,” issued an apology on Aug. 21 after sharing a false story regarding Trump’s participation in Middle East cease-fire talks. During a broadcast from the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 19, Woodruff claimed that Trump was speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, “urging him not to cut a deal right now because it’s believed that would help the Harris campaign.” She cited reports from Axios and Reuters. Netanyahu called the stories a “complete lie,” while the Trump campaign said it was “fake news.”

‘I Apologize’: “As I said, this was not based on my original reporting; I was referring to reports I had read, in Axios and Reuters, about former President Trump having spoken to the Israeli Prime Minister. In the live TV moment, I repeated the story because I hadn’t seen later reporting that both sides denied it,” Woodruff said on X. “This was a mistake and I apologize for it.” Related: Fourth Estate out on a limb for Kamala…
