Whoopi Goldberg Defends Harrison Butker Amid Backlash to Speech

Kansas City Chief’s Kicker Harrison Butker is receiving support for delivering what has become a controversial speech from some of the co-hosts of ABC’s “The View,” even if they disagree with what he said.

Over the weekend, Butker delivered a speech at Benedictine College’s — a Catholic college — graduation ceremony in which he took aim at President Joe Biden, said Pride Month represents “deadly sins,” and suggested many women in attendance “are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

He also argued men should “be unapologetic in your masculinity,” and “fight against the cultural emasculation of men.”

And his speech has sparked quite a bit of controversy.

However, during a segment on Thursday, the co-hosts of “The View” defended Butker for speaking his mind.

“I like when people say what they need to say. He’s at a Catholic college. He’s a staunch Catholic. These are his beliefs and he’s welcome to them. I don’t have to believe them. Right? I don’t have to accept them,” co-host Whoopi Goldberg said. “The ladies that were sitting in that audience do not have to accept them the same way. The same way we want respect when Colin Kaepernick takes a knee, right? We want to give respect to people whose ideas are different from ours.”

She added, “I’m OK with him saying whatever he says. And the women who are sitting there, if they take his advice, good for them, they’ll be happy. If they don’t, good for them they’ll be happy a different way. That’s my attitude.”

Meanwhile, co-host Sara Haines pointed out she agreed with Goldberg that Butker shouldn’t be canceled. However, she disagreed with Goldberg’s comparison to Colin Kaepernick as she argued Butker is sharing “extreme” Catholic views.

“But if this is his belief system. If there are many Catholics who are staunch this way…” Goldberg began to counter.

Haines interjected, “A small, small percentage go into the Latin Mass.”

“I’m just telling you, there are many people who believe this way. And I’m simply saying, rather than write a petition to get him fired,” Goldberg said, to which Haines agreed people should not be trying to get him fired.

Meanwhile, Sunny Hostin chimed to say she strongly disagreed with what Butker said, but added, “The most hateful speech is the most protected speech and that’s in our Constitution. So I am OK… he has the right to say it.”
