Much to the delight of convention attendees, former First Lady Michelle Obama delivered a speech in Chicago last night that included a wildly reckless and misguided directive concerning one of the most dangerous beliefs of our day.

Speaking inside the city’s United Center, Mrs. Obama misrepresented various policies and conservative positions on some of the hot button issues of the day. This included claims about “taking away our freedom to control our bodies, the freedom to become a mother through IVF.”

“Controlling our bodies” is code for legalizing abortion, but note how radical ideologues never talk about the child’s body inside the mother.

Claims that conservatives are pushing policies to prevent husbands and wives from utilizing In vitro fertilization are also not true. Pro-life concerns regarding the procedure have to do with protecting millions of frozen embryos. As it stands now, fertility clinics have little to no oversight, deliberately create far more embryos than they know they will use, and cavalierly discard the ones they don’t implant.

This is pure gaslighting.

No politician has called for a ban on IVF What many pro-life legislators want is to ban is the willful destruction of embryos doctors choose not to use.

There was more gaslighting to come.

Mrs. Obama also repeated the spurious claim conservatives want to ban books. There is no such thing as a banned book.

Books are readily available online or in libraries. But that doesn’t mean morally offensive and misleading books should be in public school libraries or made to be required reading for impressionable children.

But then Mrs. Obama delivered the real kicker of lines:

Demonizing our children for being who they are and loving who they love, look, that doesn’t make anybody’s life better. Instead, instead, it only makes us small.

Translation: Those who attempt to lovingly and thoughtfully help a sexually-confused child navigate their emotions and misplaced beliefs are wicked and threatening. Anyone who attempts to apply a biblical sexual ethic is a small-minded person.

I’m sorry, Mrs. Obama, but children are hungry for a parent or loving guardian’s guidance. It’s not loving to aid and abet someone’s disoriented sense of self, to allow them to remain mired in delirium and dysfunction.

Culture’s elites are doing today’s confused children no service by going along with a lie. Government officials and others in positions of authority have embraced the twisted wisdom of Seinfeld’s George Costanza, who infamously told Jerry, “It’s not a lie if you believe it.”

Sitcom silliness can be cultural deadliness, especially if we perpetuate a dangerous belief that leads to bodily mutilation and a lifetime of misery.

Of course parents love their children regardless of their struggle and misguided action. In fact, it’s the unconditional love for a son or daughter that leads mothers and fathers to confront the uncomfortable and difficult realities.

What makes a parent small is to enable lies and abdicate their God-given authority to lead their child through a difficult and confusing time. Despite what Michelle Obama believes, doing the hard thing when it comes to a child’s sexual confusion may make everyone’s life harder at first – but it will eventually lead to liberation and truth. It’s also the most loving thing a mother and father can do.
