Led by Obama, Democrats’ schoolyard taunts mirror Trump’s trash-talk tactics

In an unexpected twist, last month’s Republican National Convention led by noted trash-talker Donald Trump was filled with family-safe content, while the Democrats’ affair this week has been replete with nasty abuse.

American parents who sat down with their kids Tuesday to watch the Democratic National Convention were faced with several uncomfortable moments reminiscent of the schoolyard.

If you expected better of a former president, think again: Barack Obama’s keynote speech called out Trump’s “childish nicknames” and “crazy conspiracy theories” — then used an unmistakably vulgar hand gesture to deride a “weird obsession with crowd sizes.”

Here’s how The Post reported it: “As Obama pointed out Trump’s ‘weird obsession,’ he appeared to take his hands and move them apart and then back together as he arrived at the word ’sizes‘ before quickly putting his hands down  . . . the crowd went wild over the apparent insinuation and showered Obama with laughter and applause.”

Obama may want to look up the definition of childish, because his speech was a whole lot of the pot calling the kettle black.

In a striking contrast, Trump earlier in the day had complimented his predecessor, calling him “a nice gentleman.”

It wasn’t just President Obama trafficking in taunts and schoolyard antics in Chicago.

Here was New York Gov. Kathy Hochul: “Donald Trump was born a New Yorker but ended up a fraud, a philanderer, and a felon.”

She then teased Trump for leaving New York for Florida’s sunnier pastures.

One would think an experienced politician doesn’t need reminding, but it’s generally not good to point out one’s own executive shortcomings on a national stage.

And by mocking Trump for fleeing the Empire State, Hochul did just that.

Trump is one of many lifelong New Yorkers who have bolted because of Democratic Party mismanagement, not to mention an incompetent judicial system that will aggressively target a former president for trumped-up charges while releasing dangerous criminals.

Every New Yorker has friends, relatives and neighbors who have done what Trump has done: relocated to a state where it’s possible to run a business and feel safe on the street outside your own home.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker got into the insult-lobbing act as well, boasting about his wealth in comparison to Trump’s.

“Donald Trump thinks that we should trust him on the economy because he claims to be very rich,” Pritzker, the recipient of fortune thanks to his family’s ownership of the Hyatt hotel chain, said.

“Take it from an actual billionaire,” he said, “Trump is rich in only one thing — stupidity.”

Nothing says relatable quite like the heir of one of America’s largest family fortunes bragging about his billions of dollars of wealth.

Perhaps Democrats have decided to take this tactic because when they try to talk about the issues, Americans are only reminded of the party’s failure to make their lives better or safer.

Instead, Harris’ campaign is composing childish press releases about her opponent.

Last week, she issued a jeering missive ahead of his press conference in Bedminster, NJ — held to highlight the fact that Harris herself has scrupulously avoided reporters’ questions.

“Donald Trump intends to deliver another self-obsessed rant full of his own personal grievances to distract from his toxic Project 2025 agenda, unpopular running mate, and increasing detachment from the reality of the voters who will decide this election,” the release — styled to look like a media advisory email — proclaimed.

It went on to mock Trump for losing the 2020 election and holding an event in a non-battleground state.

“Publicly unstable, unfit, and unwell,” Harris’ advisers jabbed at the former president.

Coming just a month after Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt that killed a supporter, it was a clear signal that Harris isn’t exactly overseeing a unity campaign.

Conventional wisdom holds that Trump’s penchant for ridiculing his opponents with mocking nicknames and personal attacks severely limits his appeal to mainstream voters who shy away from such bare-knuckle tactics.

But it appears the Democrats have decided to adopt his caustic take-no-prisoners attitude and run their own aggressive, downright vicious campaign.

Maybe that’s the right call: Better to run on being a childish jerk than to remind Americans of the party’s miserable track record.
