Disgraced Sen. Bob Menendez’s lengthy career in office came to an end Tuesday — a little more than a month after he was convicted of doling out political favors in exchange for gold bar bribes and cash.

The 70-year-old New Jersey Democrat was convicted of 16 felonies for taking payola in exchange for using his powerful seat to meddle in investigations of three businessmen and the governments of Qatar and Egypt.

The longtime pol — who faces over 200 years behind bars at his Oct. 29 sentencing — had previously announced his plan to step down on Aug. 20, which is payday for Senate staff and members.

His Senate website was no longer active Tuesday evening, rerouting to the main Senate page.

The three-term senator collects a $174,000 annual salary and would have been eligible for nearly $140,000 a year plus health care when he retired, if not for a law that forces convicted lawmakers to lose out on retirement benefits.

Menendez also dropped out as the independent candidate in the 2024 Senate race last week, clearing the way for Democratic front-runner Andy Kim to likely take over his post.

Sources have said Menendez remained in the race to use it as a last bargaining chip as he seeks to broker a pardon or reduced sentence with President Biden before he leaves the Oval Office at the beginning of next year.

In 2006, Rep. Menendez was appointed to the Senate when the seat opened up after incumbent Jon Corzine became governor.

He was elected to the post in 2006, then again in 2012 and 2018.

He served as chair of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Still, Menendez has insisted that he’s innocent and has said he plans to appeal “all the way” to the Supreme Court, according to a letter he wrote to New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy last month.

Murphy appointed Menendez’s chief of staff, George Helmy, to fill his empty position until the next elected senator takes office.

During the three-month trial earlier this year, one of Menendez’s main defense strategies was to pass off blame onto his wife, Nadine, in the sweeping corruption scheme in which they were both charged.

Nadine’s trial has been indefinitely postponed as she has been undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

The only US senator indicted twice, Menendez avoided a conviction in a New Jersey federal trial in 2017 accusing him in an unrelated corruption scheme.

A mistrial was declared because of a deadlocked jury.

In that case, he was accused of accepting lavish bribes — like private flights and an all-expenses-paid trip — from his doctor pal Salomon Melgen in exchange for using his powerful office to get Melgen’s young girlfriends visas and helping him settle an $8.9 million Medicaire billing dispute.

New Jersey feds dropped the case instead of retrying Menendez.

Melgen was serving a 17-year sentence for health care fraud in a separate case — and was pardoned by former President Donald Trump in 2021.
