Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated that he would be open to a potential cabinet or advisory role if former President Donald Trump returns to the White House in January.

In a recent interview with Reuters, Trump expressed openness to a role for Musk either in his cabinet or an an advisor. “I certainly would, if he would do it, I certainly would. He’s a brilliant guy,” Trump said.

Within hours, Musk took to X to state that he would be open to the idea. “I am ready to serve,” he wrote. The post included an AI-generated photo of Musk standing over a podium with the name “Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E.),” a reference to a cryptocurrency asset he has long supported.

Musk, who voted for Joe Biden in 2020, has been a vocal supporter of right-leaning causes in recent years. He took things a step further when Trump was nearly assassinated on July 13, at which point the Tesla CEO gave Trump his endorsement. He also pledged to donate millions of dollars to pro-Trump political action committees.

Last week, Trump and Musk sat down for a lengthy discussion over X Spaces. The two discussed a number of issues throughout the lengthy discussion, including the possibility of a role for Musk in a future Trump Administration.

After Trump noted that the U.S. spends hundreds of millions on education per year despite declining results, the former president suggested that Musk could help with improving efficiency.

“In other words, horrible. And yet we spend more per pupil than any other country in the world. So we spend more. And what I’m going to do, one of the first acts, and this is where I need an Elon Musk, I need somebody that has a lot of strength and courage and smarts. I want to close up Department of Education, move education back to the states where states, like Iowa, where states like Idaho, you know, not every state will do great because states that basically aren’t doing good now,” Trump said.
