A coalition of Muslim and Arab American leaders from swing states announced Monday it’s rebranding its campaign from Abandon Biden to Abandon Harris and urged voters to back third-party candidates who support an unconditional cease-fire in the Middle East.

“The only option for people of conscience is to abandon Harris — to punish her and the Democratic Party so that they know they can never put genocide on the ballot,” Hassan Abdel Salam, a University of Minnesota professor who started the Abandon Biden campaign, said at a rally in Chicago to coincide with the start of Democratic National Convention.

The rebrand demonstrates that the war in Gaza remains a salient issue even after the Democratic ticket’s change.

Mr. Salam said his group waited to see if Ms. Harris would distance herself from President Biden’s support for Israel, but having seen none vowed to continue the campaign. He said he would join thousands of protesters on the streets of Chicago urging a cease-fire in Gaza.

So far, Ms. Harris has not released a clear policy on Gaza and Israel. She has called for an end to the fighting but has not backed a weapons embargo on Israel as some liberals have demanded.

Frustrated by the refusal to break from Biden, the Abandon Harris campaign urged people to vote for third-party candidates that have argued for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza.

“Make no mistake, you have choices,” Mr. Salam said. “Do not be deceived by the doublespeak.”

Rizwan Samad of Seattle and a member of Abandon Harris pushed back on some Democrats who argued that voting for a third-party candidate or staying home in November would put former President Donald Trump in the White House. Mr. Trump has been even more pro-Israel in its war with Gaza than Mr. Biden or Ms. Harris.

“I say genocide is happening right now,” Mr. Samad said.

Three third-party candidates, all of whom support an immediate cease-fire and an arms embargo, attended the rally: the Green Party’s Jill Stein, independent Cornel West and Socialism and Liberation nominee Claudia De la Cruz.

Ms. Stein dismissed allegations that backing third-party candidates is akin to wasting a vote, calling the suggestion “a myth.”

“If you vote for genocide, you are consenting to it and you are enabling it,” she said. “Don’t let them talk you into it. Don’t let them talk you out of your humanity.”
