Kamala Harris steals Donald Trump’s “no tax on tips” pledge

Vice President Kamala Harris has played it safe on the campaign trail so far.

She’s offered no major policy positions or laid out an agenda.

Kamala is running on vague platitudes straight out of former President Barack Obama’s “hope and change” playbook.

She debuted the first policy of her campaign during a rally in Las Vegas, Nevada, when she stole former President Donald Trump’s pledge to not tax tips.

“It is my promise to everyone here, when I am president we will continue our fight for working families of America, including to raise the minimum wage and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers,” Kamala ranted.

Trump unveiled his plan to not tax tips at a Las Vegas campaign rally in June.

She stole his idea and married it to the long-held Democrat goal of raising the minimum wage.

The former President shook up the election when he introduced the idea in June.

Not taxing tips gained traction in Nevada, where about a quarter of private sector workers are in the hospitality industry. 

Senators Jackie Rosen (D-NV) and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NY) signed on as co-sponsors to Republican legislation to eliminate the income tax on tips.

Kamala has never found a tax in her political career that she would rather cut than increase.

But the powerful Culinary Workers Union Local 226, which represents most of the casino workers in Nevada, endorsed her campaign one day before the Las Vegas rally.

And not taxing tips has become one of their priorities. 

This is a political ploy by Kamala to court voters in a crucial battleground state. 

Her record tells a different story about tipped workers.

Kamala cast the decisive vote to sic the IRS on tipped workers

Kamala cast the tie-breaking vote in 2022 for the wildly misnamed Inflation Reduction Act – a $1 trillion slush fund for Green New Deal policies. 

To pay for this wasteful spending, the bill turbocharged the IRS by doubling its budget with $80 billion in additional spending.

The IRS is hiring 87,000 new agents to wring every last nickel out of taxpayers to cover the tab for a green energy boondoggle. 

And this additional IRS funding helped create a new program to crack down on workers avoiding paying taxes on their tips.

The IRS and Treasury Department launched the Service Industry Tip Compliance Agreement (SITCA) program last year to “improve tip reporting compliance.”

“The proposed SITCA program is designed to take advantage of advancements in point-of-sale, time and attendance systems, and electronic payment settlement methods to improve tip reporting compliance,” the IRS stated in February 2023.

Service industry workers will have the IRS breathing down their necks to make sure every last penny is accounted for on their taxes.
