Federal authorities on Sunday arrested D.C. Council member Trayon White in the Navy Yard neighborhood.
Mr. White, Ward 8 Democrat, was taken into custody around 2 p.m. near the Yards Park in Southeast, according to the Washington City Paper.
The nature of the charges haven’t been revealed by either the FBI or the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Local NBC affiliate WRC-TV reported that the council member’s car was searched at the scene.
The City Paper reported that Mr. White, 40, will be held overnight and arraigned Monday.
The Washington Times reached out to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for comment, but did not immediately hear back.
D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson confirmed to local media that Mr. White was arrested.
“Both public trust and integrity in elected officials is critically important,” Mr. Mendelson said in a statement. “We’re trying to gather the facts at this time.“
Mr. White, who first took his seat on the council in 2017, won a competitive Democratic primary in June, all but assuring he would be reelected by Southeast D.C.’s overwhelmingly Democratic populace this fall.
In 2018, Mr. White made controversial comments about European Jewish financiers controlling both the weather and the federal government. He has since apologized but has also been a supporter of Louis Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam.
