Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris' housing proposals are so similar to those of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that it's hard to believe she wasn't inspired by them. Harris appears to be as dedicated to government housing as Trudeau. In a fiscal policy that Trump has called "communist," Harris has promised big spending in her first 100 days in office through an "investment" in three million new homes.

Trudeau’s recent budget contained another $8.5 billion in new spending on housing, as part of a $52.9 billion in new spending that added $40 billion to the national debt. This was all part of his government’s plan to “make life cost less,” according to Trudeau Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. It hasn't worked, however. Trudeau has advocated a government housing policy throughout his nine years in power while home prices and rents have skyrocketed.

After Harris released her plans for price-controls across economic sectors, "Kamunism" trended on X. Prosecuted meme-maker Douglass Mackey said that Harris’ housing policy sounds a lot like the central planning of ugly overcrowding that characterized Soviet housing for decades.

"Speaking of Kamunism: Kamala wants Soviet-style block apartment housing built across the country to house all the 'newcomers,'" and nobody is really talking about it. Mackey quoted an article from the Business Insider praising Harris for these proposals.

"The Democratic presidential candidate revealed the first details of her new economic agenda on Friday, which she hopes to implement during her first 100 days in office. A key part of her proposal involves building 3 million new homes over a four-year period," the article reads.

"It slots neatly into the YIMBY movement, which stands for 'Yes, In My BackYard,' and is a pro-development movement focusing on increasing high-density and affordable housing supply by targeting barriers to new building. (It's a counter to the NIMBY, or 'Not In My BackYard' movement.)

"Harris said Friday that her administration plans to build 3 million units by working in partnership with workers and the private sector to go after obstacles in the way of new construction at both the state and local level," it reads.

"This would be totally grim for America and they will absolutely be devastating red states and counties with this," Mackey notes.

Harris, Business Insider states, has recognized when she said there was "a serious housing shortage. In many places, it's too difficult to build, and it's driving prices up. As president, I will work in partnership with industry to build the housing we need both to rent and to buy."

Business Insider declares that Harris’ plan to build all these new housing units is based on "several novel methods" that include a tax incentive for builders who construct "starter homes and sell them to first-time buyers," $40 billion in taxpayer dollars to "incentivize local housing construction" on top of the current $20 billion fund that her administration already offers.

However, critics note that throwing the housing problem to local and state governments, even with billions of dollars to induce action, will do nothing to reduce the regulations that prevent new homes or apartments from being built. 

Harris has also campaigned on giving every new homebuyer $25,000 towards the purchase. Elon Musk noted on X that this is only going to push the price of homes up another $25,000 just as a basic annual income grant of say $20,000 a year would only be inflationary and reduce the buying power of that $20,000.

And if Harris wants to implement price controls to artificially control the price of everything from new homes to groceries, another dynamic from communism will soon appear: scarcity.
