Outfielder Brandon Nimmo exited Sunday’s game with right shoulder discomfort in a potential injury concern just hours after the Mets welcomed Starling Marte back to their lineup.
After fouling a pitch off during his at-bat in the seventh inning, Nimmo was checked out by a trainer and Carlos Mendoza before remaining in the game and striking out.
He was then replaced in left field by Jeff McNeil at the start of the eighth inning of their 3-2 loss to end their weekend series against the Marlins.
Earlier in the game, Nimmo gave the Mets a temporary lead with his 18th homer of the season, and he also drew a walk.
He has mostly struggled since the All-Star break, and through 115 games this season entering Sunday, Nimmo has hit .228 with 17 homers and 70 RBIs.
Facing Valente Bellozo on Sunday, Nimmo found a way to add to his numbers in each of those categories.
“I’ve been very open about it,” Nimmo told reporters Friday. “You know, I’m not doing very well. Obviously, the worse you do, the less and less comfortable you feel. But today was a step in the right direction. We’re working every single day to try and get better and be better in the game. We’ll continue to do that.”
The Mets activated Marte from the injured list Sunday, and he started in right field while Nimmo opened in left and Harrison Bader began in center.
Marte’s return gave the Mets plenty of options to work with in the outfield during the final month-plus of their season, but it’s unclear how Nimmo’s exit — if at all — could impact those plans.
