Speaking at a rally in Asheville, North Carolina, on Wednesday, August 14, former President Donald Trump announced that he will slash energy prices in half if he is elected back into the White House in the November of 2024 election. The speech was given at Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville.

As a reminder, energy prices have been a major issue under the Biden Administration, with energy prices jumping substantially at certain points in his presidency, such as when the Russo-Ukraine War began. Biden has released oil from the strategic petroleum reserve, much to the displeasure of some, particularly on the right, who saw the decision to release oil from it as irresponsible.

In fact, data shows that, over the course of the Biden presidency, energy costs are about 50% more than under Trump. Former President Trump, in any case, vowed that he could cut the price of energy, by which he seemed to mean the price at the pump, and electricity, by half and could do so just two years into a second term.

Making that pledge at Harrah’s during the explosive Asheville rally, former President Trump told rallygoers, “I am announcing today that, under my leadership, the U.S. will commit to the ambitious goal of slashing energy and electricity prices by half — at least. Half!”

Continuing, the former president said that he intends to make that happen in just a year of getting elected, or a year and a half at most. “We intend to slash prices in half within 12 months, at a maximum 18 months,” he said. He then added that even if he does not manage to fully succeed, energy costs would still be down “a lot.”

Further, former President Trump told the crowd that he fulfilled his promises during his first term, telling them, “every single thing that I promised, I produced.” He added, “We think that your energy bills will be down by 50%-70%. How good would that be for a thing called inflation?”

During the same Asheville rally, the former president touted his proposal to remove the tax on Social Security payments to seniors, saying that doing so would help them handle higher costs that have come due to inflation. He said, “To help seniors on fixed incomes who are suffering the ravages of inflation, there will be no tax on Social Security! We’re going to stop it.”

He also said that he would move funds from green energy projects to durable infrastructure like roads and bridges, saying, “To further combat inflation, I will terminate Kamala Harris’ ‘green new scam’ and … give all of the unspent funds back to building roads, bridges and give it back to the government. It’s like what she did, what they did, it’s like throwing billions of dollars out the window.”

Further, he joked that though Kamala Harris has voted to solve economic issues if elected, she can’t solve economic issues because she is the issue. He said, quite funnily, “She can’t solve the problem, because she is the problem. She really is. People like her.”
