Staunch Biden defender and Congressman Dan Goldman (D-NY) admitted that he helped prepare Michael Cohen for his testimony against former President Donald Trump, another sign that the Republican’s supporters point to as evidence of a politically-motivated criminal trial.

Trump ally Alex Bruesewitz highlighted the clip of Goldman on MSNBC where he joined former Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill and others to break down Cohen’s appearance in court Monday, which Goldman claimed only happened because of him.

“I have deposed Michael Cohen. I have met with him a number of times to prepare him,” said the New York Democrat on “Morning Joe.” He added that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has a tall order ahead of him as he attempts to prove that Cohen’s payment to Stormy Daniels was done with President Trump’s full awareness and blessing. “It does remain to be seen” whether prosecutors can show that Trump knew the extent of Cohen’s actions, added Congressman Dan Goldman (D-NY). “The detail defense is a tough one to make… The DA knows they are going to have to corroborate [Cohen] because they know he is an admitted perjurer.”

Since being convicted for lying to Congress and later released from prison in 2021, Cohen has fashioned himself into a truth teller about his former boss, giving numerous media interviews about the inner workings of the 2016 Trump campaign. On Monday he revealed details about how he conspired with former National Enquirer editor David Pecker to implement a “catch and kill” strategy around negative stories that could hurt Trump’s chances in the election.

Rep. Goldman said that prosecutors were “smart” to keep Cohen’s testimony toward the end of the trial as they hoped his statements would corroborate those of Daniels and other witnesses. However, cross-examination by the Trump defense team will quickly reveal whether they can maintain the illusion that Cohen is a reliable witness.

“[Michael Cohen] is an admitted perjurer, he is an admitted liar, he has testified inconsistently on the stand, so he’s either lying one time or the other, and he will be really skewered on cross-examination,” he added.

During the segment, McCaskill admitted that prosecutors have so far failed to produce “strong evidence” that President Trump authorized payments to Daniels. A secret recording by Cohen as well as testimony by other former high-level Trump Organization employees has so far only produced “circumstantial evidence,” she said.

“I’m a little concerned about the fact that there’s so much emphasis on the payment being made and how the payment came about being made, and I think everyone has to always keep front of mind that the prosecutors have to prove the way they recorded these payments and hid them in the business records is really the key to a conviction in this case,” McCaskill said. “And that while Trump signed all those checks, it’s a lot of circumstantial evidence. And sometimes, as Dan will tell you, a mountain full of circumstantial evidence is much better than one unreliable witness. So I do think the circumstantial evidence is significant here, but the direct evidence that Trump was fully aware that these payments were being hidden in a way that was fraudulent is a little light at this point.”
