Donald Trump will receive a jail term. It’s ludicrous, unfair, and a further setback to the notion that America is a free republic where everyone may obtain justice regardless of skin color, financial situation, or political beliefs. All of it is now dead or dying, and while it is doubtful that Trump will serve any time in prison, the punishment will become as certain as summer ends and fall arrives.

This is because Juan M. Merchan, that unquestionable fount of unbiased justice, turned down Trump’s third request on Wednesday to step down from his leadership of the Stalinist mock trial taking place in Manhattan. Remembering that Merchan has ties to Kamala Harris, whose blatant injustice and fanatical partisanship have been evident from the beginning of these proceedings, Merchan made this point. Trump, guilty of thirty-four crimes that become misdemeanors when committed by anyone else, made this point. But Merchan says these are “stale and unfounded assertions,” and he goes no further. It was neither required nor desired to hear from anybody else. That implies that Trump’s jail term will begin in a few weeks.

On September 18, there will be a sentencing hearing. September 18 is “two days after early voting in the 2024 election began in Pennsylvania,” as former prosecutor Andrew McCarthy notes. “To enable Vice President Harris and the media-DNC complex to label Trump ‘a felon who was sentenced to prison’ just weeks prior to the Election Day, at a time when Americans will already have started voting in many states, not least the potentially decisive Pennsylvania battleground,” is Merchan’s stated objective, according to McCarthy. Indeed, it’s a simpler task than comparing the records of the Trump and Biden administrations and highlighting how remarkable it was for Old Joe to start pretending to be president on January 20, 2021.

The entire purpose is to provide the Harris campaign with a potent talking point should things get really tight. McCarthy notes that “the NY prosecution of Donald Trump was politics, not justice.” Hence, the term “lawfare.” The court and prosecutors don’t give a damn if convictions are eventually overturned on appeal. Everything about it is a complete farce, staged for political effect.

Therefore, Merchan will imprison Trump. The gambit can function even in the absence of the previous president’s real capture and imprisonment. “And it’s not as if Merchan is actually going to throw Trump in prison; it is nearly guaranteed that Trump will obtain bail pending appeal, so Merchan can look to inflict a heavy imprisonment term without any real incarceration,” comments McCarthy. While many experts predicted that Trump would never have to endure the humiliation of a mugshot, we can only hope that McCarthy is correct about this for the sake of what little remains of the idea of fair justice in the United States. Given the authoritarian leanings of the Biden-Harris administration and their fervent anti-Trump sentiment, it is quite plausible that he will wind himself up behind bars.

The left may only be able to imprison Trump if they want to prevent another assassination attempt. They’ve attempted to frame him for various offenses, such as a false “insurrection.” Twice, they impeached him. In court, they found him guilty based on fabricated accusations, creating the impression that the judge had found him guilty of a crime. It’s possible that their jail card is their last one.

It would be straightforward for lefties to argue that Trump cannot be the country’s chief executive if he were a convicted felon in prison. How was he able to carry out state functions? Would he rule the state from a prison cell? Would the US president insist on escorting visiting heads of state into a penitentiary for a meeting? Why would the world view the country as a laughingstock? Never mind that for the past three and a half years, Old Joe Biden has been clumsily making his way around the world stage, displaying the extent of his dementia and the unending credulity of a considerable portion of the American public. We’ll hear that Trump is unable to lead the country while incarcerated. There would even be demands for the Republicans to install someone more palatable to the political class in his stead, like Nikki Haley.

Thus, Merchan “admonished the parties to prepare for the court to proceed ahead with the imposition of punishment on September 18,” according to McCarthy. Should we interpret the tea leaves correctly, Merchan has already determined that he would reject Trump’s request for immunity. Furthermore, there’s a good chance he’ll send Trump to prison immediately afterward. Watch out for the left’s demands to imprison Emmanuel Goldstein under the guise of supposedly just justice.
