The re-election campaign of former President Donald Trump confirmed on Saturday that it had been hacked, with several internal documents being anonymously leaked to the press.

As reported by Axios, the campaign pointed to a report from Microsoft indicating that the hack was carried out by “Iranian cyber-enabled influence operations” that had actively attempted to interfere in the last three elections as well. The Microsoft report, issued on Friday, described “significant influence activity by Iranian actors” in recent months.

Microsoft pointed to a specific culprit, claiming that  “a group run by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) intelligence unit” had sent “a spear-phishing email to a high-ranking official of a presidential campaign from a compromised email account of a former senior advisor” back in June, which led to the hack.

The same group, Microsoft claimed, had “similarly targeted” another presidential campaign in May and June of 2020.

In a statement, campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said that the leaked documents were  “obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our democratic process.”

“Any media or news outlet reprinting documents or internal communications are doing the bidding of America’s enemies and doing exactly what they want,” Cheung warned.Some of the leaked documents, which were first sent to Politico, included final reports on the vetting process for Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) prior to his selection as President Trump’s running mate.
