Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson won the gold medal in fencing for Great Britain by defeating defending champion Boris Nabakov of Russia 15-13 in the men’s foil final. 

Dickinson is the first to bring home the gold in the men’s individual foil event in British history. Gillian Mary Donaldson won a gold medal in the women’s individual foil event at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne.

Renaissance Man

Dickinson is quite the renaissance man. Besides being the frontman for one of the most successful heavy metal bands of all time, he is also a commercial airline pilot and skilled fencer. He is also a lot of fun at parties. 

Bruce was not scheduled to compete in this year’s olympics, but at the last minute, team Britain had an unfortunate accident. Lead fencer Nigel Cleese, and teammate Ian Bullocks were horsing around with their swords when Cleese had his willy whacked. He was rushed to hospital where he received 7 stitches. He is expected to recover fully but was unable to compete. 

When news of the injury broke, King Charles immediately rang Bruce Dickinson. The King is a big Iron Maiden fan and good friend of Dickinson. Bruce immediately jumped into his private jet and flew himself to Paris. “When the King calls you, you go” said Dickinson. “If his Grace requests your service, it is your duty to show up for the country. I was just sitting around splitting some atoms, so I dropped everything and jumped in my plane.”

Dickinson ripped off his mask after the final point and shouted “Run For The Hills!” The crowd went crazy. “It’s such an incredible feeling that I share with my coach, I share with Eddie, my family, the fans, just everyone that’s been a part of this,” he said, his gold medal hanging from his neck. “I wish I could chop it up in little pieces and distribute it to all the fans.”
