International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach suggests that there is no scientific way to determine whether someone is male or female.
On Friday, a reporter asked Bach if the IOC would “commit to a review of your guidelines on this matter given the controversy about what’s happened.”
He responded, “We have said from the beginning if somebody is presenting us a scientifically solid system [of] how to identify men and women, we’re the first ones to do it.”
“We do not like this uncertainty,” he added. “We would be more than pleased to look into it.”

The exchange with Bach comes over a controversy around Algerian boxer Imane Khelif’s participation in women’s boxing events.
The drama was stirred up after claims were made that Khelif failed two gender eligibility tests.
NPR notes the controversial International Boxing Association disqualified her and another boxer from some events after it said they failed some unspecified tests.
“The IOC says the IBA shared the results of the tests, which Olympic officials have denounced as they continue to defend the boxers’ participation,” it added.
