Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign for the presidency is seeing the addition of multiple strategists and advisers from former President Barack Obama’s circle, signaling a shift in favor of more serious campaign tactics with just over 90 days left before the election.

As Fox News reports, the Harris campaign hired David Plouffe, the manager of Obama’s 2008 campaign and a senior aide to Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign, as a senior campaign adviser. Stephanie Cutter, who worked as a deputy campaign manager for Obama in 2012, was also hired as a senior adviser for strategy messaging.

Other operatives include Mitch Stewart, a grassroots strategist for both of Obama’s campaigns, who was brought on as a senior adviser for battleground states on the Harris campaign. Jennifer Palmieri, the White House Communications Director in the Obama Administration, was hired to be a senior adviser to Doug Emhoff, Harris’ husband and one of the top campaign surrogates. Lastly, Harris hired Jennifer O’Malley Dillen, the campaign chair of Joe Biden’s abandoned 2024 campaign, to be her campaign manager.

The sudden flood of Obama alumni suggests that Harris has gained more favor with those close to the 44th president, who conspicuously refused to endorse Harris at first after Biden announced his initial withdrawal. He ultimately endorsed her several days later, being one of the last major figures in the Democratic Party to do so.

Harris, as the incumbent Vice President, became the clear choice to replace Biden after he announced his historic withdrawal from the race on July 21st. Biden’s decision came after an historically poor performance against former President Donald Trump in the June 27th presidential debate, where Biden’s awkward pauses, stammering, and seemingly nonsensical answers sparked widespread concerns over his mental and physical health and capabilities of serving another four years.

On July 22nd, Harris secured the support of enough delegates to become the party’s presumptive nominee, and was formally nominated by a virtual roll call on August 5th, ahead of the actual Democratic National Convention (DNC), which will take place in Chicago, Illinois from August 19th to August 22nd. On Tuesday, Harris announced her running mate selection of Tim Walz, the Governor of Minnesota.
