While Vice President Kamala Harris was supposed to be acting as President Joe Biden’s border czar, her newly-announced vice presidential pick, Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), was giving illegal immigrants in Minnesota free services.
During his time as governor, Walz has signed laws to provide no-cost health care, free college tuition, and driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, the New York Post reported.
Walz argued that it was better to offer a driver’s license to illegal immigrants than to have them drive without one. “Ensuring drivers in our state are licensed and carry insurance makes the roads safer for all Minnesotans,” Walz said in 2023 after he signed a bill that licensed illegals. “As a longtime supporter of this bill, I am proud to finally sign it into law, making our roads safer and moving us toward our goal of making Minnesota the best state to raise a family for everyone.”
Walz was also enthusiastic about not allowing National Guard troops to be deployed to the southern border to enforce security because he saw it as a way of resisting former President Donald Trump’s border policies, including separating migrant families. He was also a vociferous opponent of Trump’s border wall, suggesting that he would provide ladders to those attempting to get in, according to the Post.
“I always say, ‘Let me know how high it is.’ If it’s 25 feet, then I’ll invest in a 30-foot-ladder factory. That’s not how you stop this,” Walz declared as he claimed only electronic surveillance could monitor the border.
Harris’ efforts as border czar did not produce much fruit, besides a trip to Central America to discuss what she said were the “root causes” of illegal immigration. During her tenure as vice president to Joe Biden, millions of illegal immigrants have successfully crossed into the United States.
“My position on Minnesota becoming a sanctuary state boils down to who has the responsibility for enforcing immigration laws,” Walz told CBS News in 2018. “Sanctuary state” is a broader application of the term “sanctuary city” where a government will not enforce federal immigration law and allow illegal immigrants to be arrested or detained.
“Here’s what I believe: Congress has given federal agencies the authority to enforce immigration laws in Minnesota, and I support their doing so,” he said. “Congress has not given local law enforcement that same authority. The role of law enforcement is to enforce state and local laws, not federal immigration laws, and I strongly believe that they should not do so.”
