Vice President Kamala Harris gave President Biden a heads-up that she was picking Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, the White House said Tuesday.
Ms. Harris called Mr. Biden at the White House so he would know the name before hearing about it on the news.
“The president did receive a call from the vice president ahead of the confirmation of the news being out there,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. “He heard it first from the vice president.”
Ms. Jean-Pierre avoided answering, directly, whether Mr. Biden preferred Mr. Walz or someone else.
“If you’re asking me if the vice president sought the president’s advice, she did,” Ms. Jean-Pierre said. “He did offer up his advice and I will leave it there.”
Mr. Biden dropped out of the presidential race on July 21 after weeks of Democratic hand-wringing over his advanced age and poor debate performance in late June.
Mr. Biden endorsed Ms. Harris to lead the ticket and she consolidated support from the party.
