Vice President Kamala Harris offered the most tangible evidence that her supposed pivot to the center is nothing more than a contrived narrative when she announced Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) as her running mate.

Since Harris announced her candidacy barely two weeks ago following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race, her campaign has backed away from a laundry list of far-left positions that she previously held in an attempt to craft a more centrist image for a general election campaign.

But by picking Walz, Harris has repudiated any pivot to the center and openly declared that her candidacy will be the most radically left-wing ticket the Democratic Party has ever nominated for a general election campaign. And it is a ticket that did not receive a single vote from Democratic primary voters.

Harris selected Walz over Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA), who was universally seen as a formidable choice who would moderate the ticket and provide a crucial electoral lift in Pennsylvania, a state Harris needs to carry to win the presidency. Shapiro won a landslide victory in 2022 and enjoys high approval ratings, even among some Republicans. On policy, he has defied his party’s flirtations with Hamas, embraced Israel, and even supported expanding school choice, much to the chagrin of teachers unions.

Walz, for his part, has no such record. He oversaw the disastrous response to the George Floyd riots in Minneapolis in 2020, signed a bill legalizing abortion up until the moment of birth, mandated menstrual products in boys’ bathrooms in schools, and allowed illegal immigrants to receive driver’s licenses.

Among the most radical bills that Walz signed was HF 146, which became law in 2023 and established Minnesota as a “Trans Refuge State” where parents could lose custody of their child if they did not ensure that any child who claims a transgender identity is allowed to access puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones.

The Harris-Walz ticket wants to portray the Donald Trump-J.D. Vance ticket as “weird,” but their own record and agenda is not only weird, but it is dangerous. And if they make it to the White House, that dangerous agenda will have the largest platform of all.
