Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker may have let slip that Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro is Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate in a video posted to her campaign account.
The video, posted Friday on X, showed Ms. Parker endorsing Ms. Harris and Mr. Shapiro for president and vice president, but the Democratic presidential nominee hasn’t announced it.
Mr. Shapiro is considered a top contender for the VP slot among other candidates, including Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Ms. Parker’s video sparked confusion about what it means.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that according to a source, the video simply was an endorsement of Mr. Shapiro as VP.
But Philadelphia reporter Ernest Owens wrote on X that sources confirmed that a staffer working for Ms. Parker accidentally posted the video, which was intended to be an endorsement of both candidates on the ticket.
The Washington Times has reached out to the mayor’s office for comment.
Tapping Mr. Shapiro, a popular first-term governor, could help bolster Ms. Harris’ chances in the Keystone Stone, where she has gained momentum against former President Donald Trump but hasn’t solidly passed him in the polls.
Yet some liberals have called on Ms. Harris to avoid Mr. Shapiro. They argue that his stance on the Israel-Hamas war could hurt her bid for the White House. The governor, who is Jewish, has been a vocal supporter of Israel during its conflict with the terrorist organization, and that could turn off Democratic Muslim voters, especially in Michigan.
