The police did their job and caught the alleged perpetrator of the Southport massacre.
The alleged perpetrator will now stand trial and if found guilty I hope he gets the most stringent sentence UK law can throw at him.
His name is Axel Muganwa Rudakubana. He is 17 years old and was born in Wales. His parents are from Rwanda and, like 90% of Rwandans, are Christians. Subject to verification, my understanding is that his parents fled Rwanda around the time of the civil war and massacre of Tutsis in the hope of a better life here. They are here 100% legally. Axel’s father is a karate black belt.
Someone circulated false rumours that the boy was an illegal immigrant and so forth and a Muslim. This was presumably a disgraceful effort to capitalise on a tragedy so as to foment upset and inter-community conflict in the usual manner of divide-and-rule.
Even if the boy had been a Muslim and/or an illegal immigrant, that would not have justified making out his crime was “because of” immigrants/Muslims/illegals etc any more than the Dunblane massacre, perpetrated by a Scotsman, was “because of” the Scots or the Hungerford massacre was the fault of “the English.”
But what so unhinges a person, what disconnects them so thoroughly from Reason or sanity that they are compelled to go on a mindless rampage where they slaughter, in this instance, little girls at a dance club?
The most likely culprit is the side-effects of mind-altering drugs. And I’m not talking about street drugs. The common denominator of all such mindless rampages is that the “perpetrator was being treated for mental health issues”. You dig further and discover that the perpetrator was being “treated for depression.” The treatment is psychiatric drugs. Somehow that treatment was so counter-productive that the perpetrator went from being depressed to walking into a school yard and gunning down children or some such thing. That is a catastrophic deterioration of the person’s mental state, often in a short period of time.
But if you investigate psychiatric medications and read the “side effects” which include such things as “suicidal ideation”, homicidal thoughts and “loss of impulse control”, it becomes clear what drove such a deterioration.
Of course, such mental deterioration only rarely manifests as a mindless rampage and mass murder or the “lone assassin” phenomenon but that does not help the murdered and the bereaved. Nor does it help communities bewildered, dismayed and upset by such events, nor the innocent wrongly targeted by a mob of the dismayed and upset.
In the instance of the Southport rampage, then, we need to watch for any indications that Axel Muganwa Rudakubana was being treated for mental health issues (depression, ADHD etc) and find out what brain-damaging drugs he was being treated with. And who drugged him because they are accessories to the crime.
Justice works on specifics. Our only chance of a safe society for all the variegated communities that comprise it is the universal protection of equitable justice for all, based on just laws, evidence and personal responsibility, administered without fear or favour with no exemptions.
Mob rule isn’t justice even though those fomenting it pretend it is. It endangers all of us.
And we need to help the parents of three murdered little girls fully understand what happened to their children.
