California Adds a Second Border Wall

Although billed as a way to help stem the flood of fentanyl into the area, one border town in the Golden State has added a second border wall. Customs and Border Protection agents in the El Centro Sector in the southern portion of the state seized about 25% of the fentanyl recovered between ports of entry, so officials came up with a plan to reinforce the current boundary.

Built from materials that the federal government already owned but wasn’t using, the wall is meant to support the original barrier. The hope is that this will halt drug trafficking in the area. However, the Sinaloa cartel is aware of the strategy, and officials have discovered that the sensor bars have been cut through, making border crossings undetectable.

“What we don’t want is paralysis by analysis, or wait or to hesitate,” El Centro Sector Chief Gregory Bovino told KTLA 5. “We have to do it fast. And we have to do it hard, because guess what? The bad guys on the south side – they do it fast and hard. We have to do it faster and harder.”

Aside from the second border wall, officials are also exploring other options such as “exploiting zero-second vanishing points, residential areas where people can jump the initial wall and easily hide in residential areas,” the outlet explained. The terrain in the area is challenging, so agents use ATVs, vehicle patrols, and foot patrol to cover the sector, but they ultimately rely on the secondary barrier.

Billions for Migrant Services

A new Democrat-sponsored bill has been introduced into legislation which, if approved, would give about $3 billion per year to help new migrants in the country become more self-sufficient. A group of Congressional Democrats, led by Senator Edward J. Markey of Massachusetts, announced the proposed Destination Reception Assistance Act on Tuesday, July 30. Elizabeth Warren (MA) and Dick Durbin (IL) are just two in the party backing the motion that would provide the funding for fiscal years 2025 through 2028.

The idea behind the motion is that it would ease some of the financial pressure on cities and states. A few of the projects that could benefit from the funding include workforce development, legal services, cultural orientation training, as well as helping migrants to navigate the immigration system, and providing assistance with housing and other needs.

In the Polls

A Harris Poll and a survey on X conducted online between June 28 and 30 asked 2,090 US voters various questions, including their views on illegal immigration. When asked, “What would you say are the most important issues facing the country today?” inflation (37%) was at the top of the list, but a close second (35%) was immigration: a three-point gain from the prior month.

When asked “What are the top issues, if any, caused by mass immigration?” 57% answered “violence” and “crime” and 57% said resources, such as “healthcare” and “education.”
