Newly released video from the July 13 assassination attempt on Donald Trump’s life at his Butler, Pennsylvania rally has revealed that gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks was running around on the rooftop near the rally site in the moments leading up to the shooting.
The footage, obtained by Fox News, was shot by James Copenhaver, one of the rally-goers who was critically wounded in the assassination attempt. The video was taken at 6:08 pm, and was centered on Trump speaking to the crowd while a figure was seen moving around on the rooftop of the American Glass Research (AGR) building just minutes before gunfire rang out.
The shots began at 6:11 pm, with Trump being struck in the ear and 50-year-old former fire chief Corey Comperatore being killed while he was shielding his family. 74-year-old Copenhaver and 57-year-old David Dutch were both injured, with both victims being shot twice.
Copenhaver was released from Allegheny General Hospital on July 26, but remains in a rehabilitation center, attorney Joseph Feldman at the Law Offices of Max C. Feldman told the outlet. Feldman said that Copenhaver was shot in the arm and abdominal area.
"He had almost seen or heard something whiz past him, which we're assuming was a bullet. He felt it on his arm, and he looked down at his arm…and felt pain initially, but he hadn't even realized he had been shot a second time at that point. It could have been shock," Feldman said of Copenhaver.
In Tuesday’s testimony before the Senate, Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe said that "no information regarding a weapon on the roof was ever passed to our personnel."
He later added, "I believe that information, and this is probably something my colleague can expound on, information that was in local law enforcement channels but did not cross over and make it to Secret Service awareness."
