President Biden will have lunch with Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday, the first time they’ve eaten together since he bowed out of the presidential race this month.
The lunch comes after Mr. Biden this week suggested to reporters that he’ll help Ms. Harris choose a running mate. She has narrowed her list to six finalists and is expected to decide soon and campaign with her pick next week.
A selection would have to be made by Aug. 7 to meet an Ohio deadline requiring nominees to be certified within 90 days of Election Day to appear on the ballot.
When asked about a role in selecting Ms. Harris’ running mate, Mr. Biden said, “We’ll talk.”
Asked about his comments, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters the two “talk regularly” and he has been “a mentor” to Ms. Harris.
She said Mr. Biden “always offers up advice, any type of little bit of wisdom that he has,” based on his experience as a senator, vice president and president.
The last time Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris had lunch together, according to the president’s schedule, was July 3. At the start of his administration, Mr. Biden pledged to have lunch with Mr. Harris once a week, a practice he enjoyed while serving as vice president to President Obama.
But Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris have gone long stretches without having a midday meal together, according to Mr. Biden’s schedule.
The pair ate lunch together only twice during a six-month span in 2022.
Ms. Harris also needs to decide if she’s going to separate herself from Mr. Biden on a number of key foreign policy issues, including support for Israel in its war against Gaza, and how to tackle inflation.
