Last week, a former executive at Google managed to obtain a legal settlement with his former employer, which fired him for allegedly not being “inclusive” enough.
According to the Daily Caller, Ryan Olohan previously served as the company’s Managing Director of Food, Beverage, and Restaurants. The Employee Investigations team at Google conducted a review of Olohan’s role and performance and claimed that he “showed favoritism to high performers,” which they claimed was not “inclusive” language. He also made a passing remark about the “walking pace and hustle” of his employees, which the company determined to be an “ableist” comment.
Following his termination, Olohan took the company to court. In his lawsuit, Olohan claimed that he was the victim of sexual harassment by his boss Tiffany Miller, who accused him of “microaggressions” as punishment for rejecting her sexual advances. Google’s Human Resource Business Partner, Jacky Schiestel, ultimately concluded that Olohan was not guilty of any such “microaggressions.”
A spokesman for Miller issued a statement last year denouncing Olohan’s claims, describing them as “a fictional account of events filled with numerous falsehoods, fabricated by a disgruntled ex-employee, who was senior to Ms. Miller at Google.” Miller’s office also accused Olohan of “overt sexism and racism” in his “efforts to blame others for his termination.”
In the lawsuit, Olohan said that he had been told by Google’s Vice President of Google Consumer, Government, & Entertainment, Adam Stewart, that his team “obviously had too many White guys.” The suit further alleges that if Olohan had not been a White male, the company never would have addressed the “hostile work environment” in question.
Last week, his lawyer Alex Rissmiller declared in a letter to the U.S. District Court of New York that “a settlement has been reached in resolution of all claims.” Rissmiller has not provided further details on the nature of the settlement.
